The Municipality of Vrsac is characteristic for its rich diversity of nationalities caused by series of migrations through the centuries. The peak migration of Serbs was during the 15th century and there was continuous immigration in different flows during the period from 17th till 20th century. The most recent increased immigration was after the WW I and WW II.
During 18th and 19th there was planned and systematic immigration from Germany, Italy, France and Spain. At the same period there was spontaneous immigration from Romania, Hungary, Czech Republic, and Slovakia etc. Today in Vrsac live about 20 nationalities.
According to the last official counts of population published in 2002 there were 54.369 people in Municipality of Vrsac. In the town live 36.623 and in villages 17.746. Vrsac’s population stands at 67 people per sq. kilometer. The number of people constantly declines and it is about 17 people per year.
The population of Vrsac peaked in 1961 (61.284) and the smallest number of people was in 1948 (51.792). The most significant decline of population was in 1991when declined for 6.453 people and in 1948 (6.159). These were years of turbulent political times. The population growth was in 1961 (5.690), in 1953 (3.802) and in 1992 (3.048). The period of stagnation was from 2001 till 2005.
The population growth rate is negative and it is minus 5 per 1000 people.
Average age of the population in Vrsac is 40 years. Over the last 30 years average age of the population in Vrsac declines for 2%. The greater proportion of population is between 45 and 49 years and the smallest number of people is over 80 years. In the Municipality of Vrsac there are more women than men (estimated percentage was 4% in 2002). There are some interesting facts: age: 0-19 more boys than girls, 20-29 more women than men, 30-34 more men than women, over 35 more women than men.
Structure of national and ethnic groups: Serbs 72%, Romanians 11%, Hungarians 5%, Roms 2%, Macedonians and Croats 1%, Other 7%.
Population by martial status, number of families and children
In 2002 there were 40% married people, 35% has never been married, 17% widows/widowers and 7% divorced. It is interesting that there are more unmarried men than women but in total structure there are 38% divorced men and 64% women.
Most families (36%) in Vrsac have one child and 31% families are with no children. 31% families have two children have and only 3% families have three children and -1% families have four children. Families with children under 25 years make 62%.
Most of households have two members but households with five or more members very rare in Vrsac. Average number of members per household is 2.89.
Professional qualification and employment
Most people in Vrsac (42%) have finished secondary school, 24% have finished elementary school and 10% have finished university while uneducated make 6.7%.
In 2004 there were 12.221 employed in companies, institutions and organizations. In small enterprises worked 4.330 in 1.562 shops. Average number of employees in small enterprises was 2.8. Agricultural population was estimated to 3.6220 or 20%.
In March 2005 there were registered 6.648 unemployed people and in March 2006 there were 7.104 unemployed. The unemployment rate has been raised for 1.43% for a year. Most of unemployed (29.74%) were unqualified workers while high educated people made 2.76%.
The highest employment growth rate was in 2001 (269.09%) and the lowest was in 1995 (1.47%). The highest fall in income was in 1999 and was 51.65%.
